Despite updating the content on my wine cabinets page on VatRats I noticed this morning that it hasn’t been crawled by google since 24th October.
On close inspection I noticed I hadn’t updated the content on a number of other pages and had 4 or 5 virtually blank pages, I also noticed I wasn’t linking to the wine cabinets page from the wine articles section.
This is mainly due to the fact I quickly set the structure of Vat Rats up back in October but then got distracted and never added the actual content.
Hopefully, over the next few days I will add the content, interlink the pages a bit more and see if I can get google crawling the site a bit more frequently.

As you will see I use sharethis on this blog.
It’s a nice little gadget, but the security implications amaze me.
2 simple demonstration:
Click on the sharethis button on the bottom of this page, then click on Twitter, up pops a box asking you for your Twitter username and Twitter password.
Now close the box, click on sharethis again, then click on WordPress. Again a popup box, this time asking for your wordpress password and username.
The same happens for blogger and typPd.
Basically, if you use any of these you are sending your username and password for each account. The big question id, how are you sending it and more importantly, who are you sending it to (or via)
Now I’m not saying sharethis are doing anything wrong, but do you feel safe not knowing who you are sharing your passwords and usernames with.
Another far more serious issue in my opinion is, How can you even be sure you are sending the info via Sharethis? Anyone could knock up a fake sharethis system and be harvesting usernames and passwords, think about that, how would you like it if someone knew your WordPress username and password?
I’ve had a web page up for about 3 or 4 years now displaying my list of Top 10 Mobile phones which I don’t really do anything with apart from updating the list every now and then.
Checking in my stats recently I have noticed an increasing number of visitors are using mobile phones and handheld devices when viewing the page so with this in mind I have just created a new version of my top 10 mobile phones page using an alternative stylesheet, a slightly different layout and no images.
Hopefully, google won’t flag it as duplicate content, as it isn’t there to deceive in any way but is there to make it more convenient for users of handheld devices and mobile phones.

Whilst updating my WordPress blogs after the recent scare about security issues I came across an old one which I set up a couple of years ago for Disability News but then forgot all about.
It was located in a directory on one of my wheelchair ramps sites, it only consisted of about 2 pages, 3 or 4 posts and was only in the original WordPress them, not adapted in anyway.
As I was updating WordPress anyway, I set up a new theme then re-skinned it to look nicer and be more search engine friendly.
Once I had it st up better I made 3 or 4 posts and was surprised to see they were all indexed by Google within minutes.
Over the coming weeks I will be adding more disability related content and try to keep it regularly updated.
I sorted through the listings in one of my directory sites yesterday and created new pages which group together the businesses which have opted for the upgraded directory listings.
I initially had them all on one page Graded listings but have now divided them up in to ,
I’ve been having one of those problems we have when optimising every now and then where an older page on a site is outranking a newer page for the target phrase.
I set up a page for mortgage brokers in Dorset for someone a couple of years ago but since then they have changed the name they trade under. With this in mind, we set up a new page targetting mortgage brokers in Poole but left the old pager up as well.
Jump forward a couple of months and the old page is still top 3 for mortgage brokers in Dorset, but no sign of the new page.
It looks like the old problem of an old established page blocking a new page appearing for the same phrase.
In the past when this happens I either deoptimise the old page or delete it completely in the hope the new page will replace it in the SERPs, but this time because the old page is for the same business I have the option of simply replacing the old content with the new, the only problem with this is that the old name is used in the URL.
Whilst creating my new Warwickshire Business Directory site I decided to try and limit it to approx 200 business categories and create an individual page for each category. This causes the problem of all categories needing linking together. To ovecome this a little I also created an alphabetical list and created 26 new pages like so;
A : B : C : D : E : F : G : H : I : J : K : L : M : N : O : P : Q : R : S : T : U : V : W : X : Y : Z
I then placed each category in the suitable page and will eventualy add the alphabetical navigation menu on to all 200 category pages too.
