mangeur de cigogne competition 7 years today

OK, so the content may have changed a bit but my old mangeur de cigogne competition page is still up.

mangeur de cigogne was one of the early search engine optimization competitions where the object  was to rank highest for a made up phrase.

The phrase mangeur de cigogne (Stork eater in English) was chosen and the timeframe was 2 months and ended on 15th June 2004

My memory is a little rusty but I seem to remember the finishing order was;

  1. Jan  – Actulab
  2. Jerome - NoName
  3. Laurent - Thickparasite

As the name suggests, Mangeur de Cigogne was a French Search engine optimisation competition organised by promoweb

List of participants here: http://concours.promo-web.org/participants.htm

The others I remember;

apologies to anyone I have missed.

How do I remember the day so well? I missed the last few hours because I was in the maternity ward holding my wifes hand as little TJ was born :o )

Hope all competitors are well and still doing battles with Google ;o)

Shift to online advertising continues

Google has just announced better than expected results for the first quarter of 2009 with net profits of  over$1,4 billion.

Google Chief executive Eric Schmidt says,

“The shift to online advertising gives us a big advantage and outpaces any losses from falling economic activity”

These views are shared by UK Small Business Directory managing director Terry Simmonds after confirming that in the 1st quarter of 2009 the number of new businesses requesting a business listing was in excess of 10,000 for the first time.

Not only are more small businesses looking for free online advertising opportunities, an increasing number are also realising that the low cost upgrade packages are proving to be very cost efective and the Return On Investment (ROI) far outweighs the old traditional forms of advertising.

Further information about the UK small Business online advertising options can be found in the Cheap Advertising section of the site and examples of upgraded listings can be found via the links on these pages;

Upgrade options – Bronze Listings :: Silver Listings :: Gold Listings

As more and more business owners look towards online advertising, online directories and search engines are constantly changing to meet the needs of these business owners.

Google cookies affecting SERPs

Yet again I am noticing strange results in the SERP’s when searching with Google.

The affects only occur when using Internet Explorer on one pc, as soon as I switch to Firefox or Opera the results change, and also if using IE on another pc the results change too.

I have noticed a similar occurance before and the strange results only changed after deleting cookies from IE. Could google be using cookies to monitor individual users behaviour?
